Debra has been a professional writer for nearly 12 years with an expertise in corporate communications, as well as feature
articles.
Debra's experience writing and editing copy for small and large companies include her specialties: newsletters, corporate profiles, and web content. She has also freelanced for local, national, and trade publications, as well as online, with a focus in the areas of entertainment, lifestyle, and business.
A Chicago native, Debra felt a passion for
writing ever since childhood. “People don’t choose to be writers,” she believes. “Writing chooses you.”
Prior to moving to California, she served as Community Events Coordinator at Barnes & Noble and a Production Editor at Publications International, Ltd., where she worked on a variety of non-fiction books, ranging from Nature Crafts and Western Design to Stars of Country Music and Best of Elvis.
During her time at B&N, Debra created a Writers Support Group, which focuses on goal-setting, accountability, and networking with light critique. Six years ago at Barnes & Noble in Santa Monica, she re-launched the group, which now meets on a monthly basis. The environment, which assists writers in their quest to become published, encourages members to prioritize various projects, resulting in greater productivity. Many success stories have come out of the group.
Debra received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin—Madison, where she was an award-winning public speaker on the nationally ranked Forensics team. These days, she puts her public speaking chops to good use, facilitating panels at Final Draft’s Scriptwriters Showcase, hosting seminars, and speaking on writing at various events.
